I auditioned tonight. My friend Meredith auditioned with me. I'm sooo glad that she did. It was very reassuring to have her there. It would be sooo cool if we got to be in a cast together.
The auditions were primarily singing. I sang the song I "prepared'" - The Lullaby of Broadway. Then they found my range on the piano. Then they had me sing bits of songs for 3 different parts. I'm pretty sure that they won't consider me for the part that I thought I wanted. My vocal range isn't quite high enough. I did say on my form that I would accept any part.
Call backs are on Saturday. That's when they will have people read for particular parts. I think I have a decent shot of getting a call back. The unfortunate thing is that I may have to watch conference online after the fact. Not my favorite choice, but I am extremely grateful that I have the options to watch it later.
Regardless of whether or not I get a part, I felt good about my audition. It was a good experience.

You'll never believe it!
After the last 3 serious posts I bring you a doozy - the delightful follow up on my glasses. Let me just quickly remind you that after 6 weeks messing with Sears Optical I went to Target Optical. Target is very proud of their 7-10 day turn around. (And I was assured that 7 days was longer than normal.)
Today the manager at Target Optical calls and lets me know that today - day 12 - my glasses were delivered from the lab to... wait for it, wait for it... Florida! I thought she was going to die!
All I could do was laugh. And laugh. And laugh.

Additional morning musings - Part 3 of 3
I woke up thinking about other things that I'm manically fixated on - new glasses and facebook (to a lesser degree).
Now when I say fixated I mean an unhealthy amount of attention goes to these - something to the effect of obsession. Let me give you an example - new glasses. (Granted I've not had the best luck this time around, but still...) On Tuesday I was so fixated on getting these new glasses that... Oh wait it started Monday night. Monday I call and am told they aren't in yet. A normal thinking person would be bummed and think maybe tomorrow. I started first being unreasonably angry (that's the rage thing I was telling you about) and then I got desperate and couldn't stop thinking about them (I'm going to go ahead and classify that one as anxiety or a "frenzied mind"). A couple hours later I call Target and leave a lengthy voicemail asking them to make phone calls for me to find them. (A reasonably thinking could do this but they would not do it in desperation.) I don't get a call back so Tuesday I call every 15-30 minutes for several hours until I get someone to tell me that aren't there but the list indicates they should be here by week's end (the rage ensues again because the anxiety never left no thank to you, Lorazepan! Curses!). The funny thing (I'm choosing to see the humor here) about it is that I can feel myself getting worked up as I type right now.
Maybe I should back it down a notch. They are glasses. It's not like I can't see or that life will change with new glasses. Ah the joys of mental illness. :o)

An additional musing that I just thought of - Part 2 of 3
Oh yeah, and another thing that the mania does to me is gets me fixated on things. Like right now I'm uber fixated with my audition for Nunsense next week. You would think it was life or death.
It's not. :o)
And it's a little bit making me CRAZY!

Musings of a bipolar mind - part 1 of 3
Today I'm not a fan of type II bipolar disorder.
There are so many misconceptions and social stigmas attached to bipolar disorder. If you don't live with it, how could you understand it? It's hard to understand even when you do live with it. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterizes by highs (mania) and lows (depression). Those with type I bipolar disorder generally experience extreme manias. Some to the point of thinking they have supernatual powers and other frenzied thinking. Type II is characterized by hypo-manic episodes and major depressive episodes. That means that your manias aren't as high and your depressions are waaaaaay low.
For me along with the cycles of every day life, I generally have 2 big cycles per year - one at the beginning of the year and one toward the end of the year. And I'm just realizing now that I have an even bigger cycle every 5 or 6 years.
For my 2 big cycles during the year I mostly face depression. Things will be going along and I started having difficulty dealing with life. Just normal everyday stuff - not major things. I actually have been on medication for depression since I was 16. To answer your question, no - I don't think I'll ever be without it. I've made several (idiotic I might add) attempts to be med-free and it always ends in disaster. I've come to terms with needing chemicals to fix the broken chains in my physical chemistry. (Not to say that I won't ever make another idiotic attempt... one day when I run out of medicine and forget to refill it for an extended period of time... not that I've done THAT before or anything...) I've been on a number of anti-depressants over the years. There was that one that I got totally addicted to and was like an addict for 2 weeks trying to get off it... And the one that completely ELIMINATED my libido... And the one that worked well for a couple years until my body adapted to it...
My favorite over the years is Wellbutrin SR. (It's my current anti-depressant of choice.)
My bigger cycle every 5 or 6 years is with the mania. (In case you were wondering, I'm going through one of those cycles right now.) It started a couple of weeks ago when I got out of hand in a manager's office at work. I thought I was being totally rational (that's usually what you think when you are manic) and it wasn't until my psychiatric appoiontment last week that I realized I was out of control. As I was telling him about the goings-ons in my life I realized how much anxiety and rage was building up in me just talking to him. (The rage is what I displayed in the manager's office at work. Unfortunately, it did some damage to our relationship. Shrapnel of the disorder. I'm now working on damage control. Comes with the territory.) He is a very very good doctor. After discussing with me the possible effects on pregnancy, we decided to give Lithium a try. (Seeing as I'm not pregnant and apparently not especially fertile I told him I was not concerned about the .5% higher risk of some random defect that is correctable anyhow.) He also prescribed some Lorazepram for the anxiety - but it has mostly made me sleepy and not so much helped with the anxiety.
It's terrible knowing that you have a great life and not being able to control your mind. That's the thing that most people don't understand about mental illness - you can't control it. It's not just mind over matter and everything is better. I've been in situations where my part of my brain is screaming at me - what are you doing? what are you saying? But the acting part of my brain keeps on doing and saying. (This is much more pronounced during the manias than it is during the depressions. During the depressions there's not much doing or saying at all.)
I think that the best thing about my situation is that medication keeps me balanced and in control and stable and steady and all those good things for most of the year most of my life. Most people probably wouldn't know that I have a mental illness. Especially one like bipolar disorder. I am so grateful that it's something that can be kept under control. I'm pretty sure my grandmother is bipolar and she's lived a whole life with anxiety and a frenzied mind. People have just always thought she was "high-strung" and "naggy" and a plethora of less nice things. And she is really struggling right now. It would be so neat if she could have the chance to find medicine to stabilize her so that she and my grandfather could enjoy each other during their last years on earth. I think that's what got my thinking about it and sparked me to write about it. I don't usually share so openly (meaning with the entire internets and anyone who happens to blogstalk or bloghop on to it). But I would love to make a difference helping people understand mental illness and what it's like. It should not be the social pariah making thing that it once was. We don't just send people to the looney bin. They can be helped. There are possibilities of being under control with the right types of medications and therapies!
(Hopefully this explains why I'm not a fan of type II bipolar disorder today. )

The saga continues...
Can you believe it? I still don't have new glasses. After all that, the Sears lady calls and says "I have bad news and I want to see what you want to do about it." I want a refund - duh. So my sweet husband goes in and gets a refund and she said she'd see if she could get me a good deal on just the frames.
Yeah, whatever - so I went to Target Optical and spent a bit more money and ordered a pair of glasses, a pair of prescription sunglasses, and 2 boxes of contacts.
The new glasses are blue... teal.... turquoise... whatever. I'm not sure if Richard is as excited about them as the others. (And I'm sure that he's not as excited about them as I am about his.) At least he didn't SEEM as excited about them, but that very well could have had to do with being beat down by the whole experience.
I'm hoping to get them this week. If I do, I'll post some photos. If I don't, I'll take it as a sign that I'm not meant to get new glasses this year.
Oh yeah the Sears lady's great deal on the frames was selling them to me for $100 a whole $39 less than original price. Whoop. ee. Never going back there.

A call from Sears
So the lady from Sears Optical calls me today. She sounds super beat down and tells me that she received a fax from the district manager with my complaint. She proceeds to tell me that the lenses got there yesterday but they were too big for the frames. She can go have Lenscrafters trim them down but after she got the fax she wanted to be sure I didn't want the refund first.
I asked her to get the glasses done please. The last thing she said before she hung up the phone was "I'll call you before I leave at 5:00 and let you know if they'll be done today or tomorrow." I felt guilty for getting her in trouble all the way until 5:00 when she didn't call me. After all that and the super guilt trip she gave me about how she can't control how the lab sends things and she can't change Sears policy blah blah blah - she doesn't follow up like she says she will.
Good grief.

Sears reply (then mine, then theirs)
This is all via email mind you:
Sears reply (fairly early this morning)
Dear Susan White,
Thank you for your recent correspondence. We are always interested in hearing from our customers, but we regret it was this type of situation that prompted you to contact us. We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced and understand your frustration with your local Sears Optical Center.
Please provide the Sears location at which this incident occurred, including city and state. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with your local Sears Optical Center. We appreciate your business and value you as a Sears Holdings customer. We certainly hope you will continue to make Sears Holdings your choice for quality and value.
Sincerely,
Joanne J.

My reply:
Thank you for your quick reply. The store I'm referencing is (I put the location here).
To be clear, the associates were not rude (although I was offended to be given melted frames). At the same time they were not direct with me. If they had called me and told me there was a mistake and corrected it without my having to be involved the first time, I would be considerably less frustrated with the situation.
Thank you for your time,
Susan White
And their reply (which I only now realized was from a different person - which explains the use of the same canned phrase from before):

Nothing too spectacular there. Just wanted to give you the update.

My letter to Sears
Dear Sears Customer Relations,
My experience with Sears Optical has been less than ideal. I ordered a pair of glasses on 2/7. My husband ordered his the day before and both pairs arrived on 2/11. I was very impressed considering the estimated date of arrival was 2/17. I went to the store to pick up both pairs. I tried mine on and couldn't see out of them and they looked a little different than I remembered. The associate assured me it was because I had been in another pair of glasses all day and if I just took them home and started with the new ones in the morning I would be good to go. I went out to my car and took another look at the glasses. Not only had the lenses been stretched to the point of crackling but the plastic frames were MELTED around the lenses!
Is this how Sears does business? Give the customer an inferior product and hope they don't notice?! I was slightly offended.
I didn't have time to go back in so I returned that evening. Another associate took one look and said "These are awful, they didn't do these right at all." Then both associates proceeded to tell me that I might not be able to get the frames because my prescription was "too strong". The 2nd associate assured me that she would re-order them right away. She even went so far as to write herself a lengthy note indicating the situation with the words "RED FLAG" at the bottom. I left thinking the new pair would be there as quickly as the first pair.
A week later I call in and 2nd associate assures me that she has ordered the lenses but is having difficulty finding the frames. I call back a few days later and I'm told that "re-makes" take longer because they want to make sure it's done correctly. I call every couple of days until 2/28 when I'm told that the glasses arrived on 2/27 but they didn't call me because the prescription was wrong and they had to re-order them AGAIN. She invites me to come in and see how they look because they were wrong about the "too strong" prescription and they are just lovely. I go in trying to decide if I'm ready to ask for a refund and go elsewhere. After another reassurance that the re-order should be quick and they will let me know as soon as they come back in I leave.
It is now 3/9 and I have not heard anything about the glasses - not even an update. I anticipate getting the call and going in to finally pick up the correct pair with non-melted frames and correct lenses just to be told that in spite of my trouble, these frames do not come with a quality carrying case - they only come with the soft plastic Sears case. I'll have to spend additional money if I want something that will last longer than the ride home.
I'm absolutely ready to be refunded and find someplace that wants to provide the service that I am paying for. I'm not sure why I keep wanting to give Sears another chance to give me that "wow" factor. Regardless we will not return to Sears Optical again. My husband loves Sears but this has been an unpleasant experience that I'm not interested in repeating.
I write so you have the chance to not lose other customers in the future.
Thanks for your time,
Susan White

My Sabbath day
We got to go to Jonathan and Jayne's ward and be there for Bobby Ray's blessing. I was so impressed. I really felt the spirit during the blessing. I love seeing my brother doing things like this. I'm so glad that we are close and can be a part of things like this.
Meanwhile, in my ward (that was going on at the same time) I got released as a primary teacher and called as the 1st Counselor in the YW presidency. I'm excited to work with the Mia Maids.

The most AWESOME primary class party EVER!
I just noticed that this is post 100 for me. Yippee! And to celebrate, I'll tell you all about my class party! I LOVE my primary class soooo much! I have the 11 year olds and they are fantabulous! This is our 2nd class party and we really had fun. First we practiced a song that I'm going to volunteer us to sing in sacrament meeting. Then we had ice cream sundaes. Then we made thank you cards for the bishopric. Then we had a dress-up clothes fashion show.
For those of you who have known me for some time (Mandy comes to mind) - you'll be delighted by these photos. They will remind you of single's ward family home evenings, bachorlette parties and all kinds of crazy shaningans! These kids are so much fun.

Before the fashion show, Tim had to try on the chain mail. I'm surprised he could stay upright. It is SOOO heavy!

Here some "back stage" madness.

Here's Sydney, she was our judge (along with Richard who came home for lunch during the party.)
The rules were 2 outfits and you had to keep at least one thing the same in both outfits.
\
I went first. This is the outfit they picked out for me.

Next came Moe as Little Red Riding Hood

Next came Timothy as Brooklyn Monkey Holmes. Delightful!

Next Maddie as Dorothy

And Madisan as a princess.
Second round (we came in a different order).

Wicked Monkey Witch (can you tell what he used twice?)

Seriously love this shirt and skirt. (The skirt totally has a matching jacket! I've never been able to fit into it so I'm excited that someone can enjoy it!!)

You can't really tell by this photo but this dress rocks! It is a sleeveless dress and has this shawl-like thingy with wrist bands. I have NO idea what era it's from but it's super cool.

Here's our fairy.

And last but not least our beautiful butterfly!
I'm amused by how many shots have dog head or dog hiney in them. After the second round the judges announced us all winners and shortly thereafter parent's came to pick everyone up. As class parties go, this one was tops! I told the girls that next time we'll have to do a music video. (And mom's and older sisters are totally invited.) They were great about clean up before they headed out and I was truly delighted that we had so much fun dressing up. I've really been blessed with this class.
