My dress-up clothes room is taking flight!!

So I'm most excited about my dress-up clothes room right now so I'll start off with a brief MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my blog-stalking friends and dive right into the dress-up clothes room excitement.

Happy birthday Joni!

I haven't spent time with my bestest bud in months! Seriously months! So I took my last vacation day yesterday and we spend the day together to celebrate her birthday. It was so delightful. We went out to eat then got pedicures then played with her kids. I loved it. They had a TON of books about snow from the library. We read like 10 of them. It was awesome.


So the funny thing is that I didn't take any photos of us yesterday so here is a Music Man classic. She's super cute and pregnant right now. She's expecting a little boy in March or April (dang I can't remember). Anyway, happy birthday dear friend!

Oh what a night!

We closed on our house yesterday afternoon. Hip hip hooray! We had a great showing of elders quorum members to help us move. It was wonderful! I'm sooo grateful they were willing to come help us. (And there was only one minor mishap to remember them by...) BUT there will be a whole nother post about the house. This post is about last night.

Last night after we closed and when shopping at Lowe's for new locks, we had our date night - creating Richard's EQ Pinewood Derby car. It rocked! Here are some pics.

Exciting new things!

Well, today I went to Super Saturday and learned a couple of new skills and strengthened friendships with a couple of friends. I went to Pet Smart to price invisible dog fences and adopted a new dog (although she will stay with the foster mom for another week or so.).

And I held off sharing because it's still in the works but we are closing on a house on Nov 17. It's in Hurst (so we'll stay in the same ward). We are really excited about it. I'll post more about it when it's actually ours!

Halloween shenanigans

Just a quick post with a few photos from Halloween. We sure do love dressing up. It's definitely a tradition for us. We LOVE doing couples and this year we chose Shrek and Fiona. I put most of it together from Thrift Town items. The crowd reaction was phenomenal. We had people running us down in the store to get our photo.


Richard totally shaved his head and super-glued on the ears. That's real dedication! How did I get so lucky.

Stellar day

At work our department has something called the Stella Award. It's a "career achievement award unique to Accounting Services at Dallas designed to validate and recognize individuals who consistently demonstrate the qualities essential to promoting and sustaining a High Performance Environment / Great Place to Work." We have a huge banquet where everyone dresses up and it's totally hush-hush who the winners are until their 'unveiling' at the banquet. This is the 3rd year of the award and banquet. This is my third year to be on the banquet committee and my third year to lead the choir for the event.

This year much to my delight and surprise - I received the award.

It was the perfect way to be honored. I got to invite 6 guest - my husband and my 5 siblings (it just so happened that my brother from OR is in town this week so he even came). My friend Mary Perl who happens to be on my team and in the choir and won a Stella award last year wrote a speech to "present" me as a winner. It was the most amazingly perfect presentation - I could not have asked for a more perfect presentation. Here are some photos and her speech.

Mary's speech:

I looked up Stella in the dictionary and the definition was star. Susan truly is a star. She is not just a star at work; she is also a star to her family, her friends, in the choir and in the theatre. Her passion, enthusiasm, brilliance and fun loving nature make her shine a little brighter than most. Susan’s accomplishments at work are numerous and it would take more than the time I have to name them all. What I feel everyone should know about Susan is how others feel about her. Susan’s first manager at Allstate had this to say:

Susan is the most functionally creative person I know. Seriously. She can sew, draw and sing. But she can also program a database, direct a choir and write a presentation. She can redesign a mail process, work through system access hurdles and reassure a first time presenter. That's amazing to me. Its true talent matched with skill. But more than that, its true brilliance matched with heart.

One of her co-stars said that Susan is fun, creative, talented, and wacky. He said she always has great ideas and she is willing to try anything to make the performance a success. A choir member said that Susan is the heart and soul of the choir. She encourages everyone to take risks and to have fun while doing it.

I wanted to find out about Susan from the people who know and love her best, her family. Unfortunately her parents were not able to make it here today but they told me they are very proud of Susan. Her mother said “it is hard to believe that Susan started out in life as a very quiet and painfully shy little girl, she almost didn’t make it to class that first day of kindergarten because she was so anxious. I guess kindergarten was all it took to loosen her up.” Susan has blossomed into a confident and remarkable woman.

Susan is the oldest of 6 children (all 6 children have worked at Allstate). I had the opportunity to speak with them and to find out why Susan was special to them. Her sister Allison said that Susan is not just her sister, she is her friend, she is a good listener and she is always there to help her day or night. She said that Susan has a big heart. They went to serve at the soup kitchen and one of the people they were serving said they were cold and Susan actually took the coat off of her back and gave it to that person. That is one of the reasons she always looks up to Susan. Her brother Randall had a similar story. He told me about a time when Susan was traveling on a trip a couple of years ago to a family gathering in Utah. Susan heard a woman crying and asking for help in the airport bathroom stall. The woman had a medical problem. She had soiled her clothing and was trying to rinse them off in the toilet. Susan heard other women coming out of the bathroom being really inconsiderate. She went in and asked how she could help. She bought/gave the lady some replacement clothes, and helped her get ready for her flight. This wasn't a special occasion -- Susan always does things like this. Her brothers joke that she's the one who is going to heaven because she just does good things. He added -I can only imagine that this same attitude is also apparent in her career at Allstate. She wants to make the world a better place within the sphere of her influence.

Her brother Jonathon had this story to share: Growing up, our family could not afford the airfare to go on vacations. As a result, we would take longs drives to our destinations. One summer, on one such drive, I was singing out of a song book that contained music from Disney’s Aladdin. I was probably 11 or 12 at the time, and Susan was probably 15 or 16. After singing a solo of the “One Jump Ahead” reprise, Susan praised me for how well it sounded. It was a nice compliment, but I didn’t think anything of it. I have thought back to that moment many times in my life. Isn’t it funny how the words of praise from your older sister at age 12 could have such an impact on your life? How many teenagers would have such kind words for a younger sibling? This is who Susan is. She lives her life lifting people up and helping them to see who they really are. I became a better person, and a better man, because Susan believed I could be. Her brother Bradley agrees with his brother’s sentiments. He said that Susan is his cool older sister and she is always looking out for him. Her sister Melanie said that Susan is hardworking and dedicated. She said that Susan always takes the time to make sure that everyone is included and she always stands up for what she believes in, even if it is not the most popular point of view. She loves children and loves to play dress up. She said that Susan is never afraid to show the kid inside her and will play Star Wars for hours with her nephew. In fact dressing up and playing Star Wars is how she started dating her husband Richard. She was helping him make a Hans Solo outfit for Halloween and she ended up being his princess Leia and she still is today. Richard told me that what he loves about Susan is her upbeat and positive attitude. She is a hard worker and has a smile for everyone she meets.

All of this made me realize that with Susan what you see is what you get. Whether at work or at home she is the same kind caring wonderful person. She is someone we should all look up to. I know I do. It is my great honor to present her with the Stella award but even a greater honor to call her friend. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you my friend, Susan White.

When it rains, it pours . . .

I didn't post for such a long time, now I feel like posting everyday (but let's be honest - probably won't happen). This has been an eventful three-day weekend for us. Saturday I was to a practice for the Primary program, then drove to Denton to pick up Allison to go with me to get our haircut in Irving, drove her home then went to a ward luau.

The practice was delightful. I really do enjoy being the favorite primary teacher of all time. (Heavenly Father's little blessing for his daughters who really wants to be a mom but isn't quite yet.) There is a family of 4 boys that I just love to pieces. The youngest 2 sat by me and the 3rd is in my primary class. We had them over for family home evening and when they settled down (definitely a chore) it was awesome. They listened to my lesson and we had fun playing games like Button, Button, Who's Got the Button and eating our treat (ice pops).

The haircut adventure was a good one. I haven't figured out how to style it yet so hopefully I'll like it better in the days to come.

The ward luau was great fun. Richard had to work at his new job that we are so excited about so I went by myself and sat with 3of my primary girls - sooooo fun! We are in a neat ward.

Sunday was the primary program. The kids were so reverent. I was very impressed. I think the program is funnier when you are sitting in the congregation because you can watch the cute things the kids do. When you are on the stand you are too busy making sure kids are where they are supposed to be.

Sunday was also my first lesson with 8 kids in my primary class. We had a really hard time being quiet, paying attention and being nice to each other. I didn't handle it as well as I would have liked. I'm working on some ideas to make it better next week. Seating arrangement is one of those things. I really really love my class.

Yesterday we stayed home from work and went to see the King Tut exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. NOT worth $30. They tried to make it worth the price, but there just weren't very many items actually from Tut's tomb. We went with a family in the ward and rode the train, ate lunch, saw the exhibit, rode the train back and had snow cones. We enjoyed spending the time with them.

Today I got lots of compliments on my hair. That was definitely needed while I try to figure out how to comb it.

Oh and the most exciting thing - we put a bid on a house! We should find out if we get it by the end of the week. Very exciting. I'm a little anxious but I know that everything will work out for the best and that Heavenly Father is most certainly mindful of us.

I didn't blog about . . .

It's been waaaaay too long since I've posted. I didn't post about my new calling as Valiant 11 primary teacher (which I'm going to LOVE and have a feeling will be blog worthy on a weekly basis - as soon as I mentioned my affinity for High School Musical I was totally in with the girls). I didn't post about General Conference and how much I loved it. I didn't post about Richard's new job as a shift manager at Auto Zone (YAY!). I didn't post about Brad's birthday or the hilarious Happy Bunny stickers we gave him (totally wish I had taken a pic - one of them says "Alcohol - the perfect thing for kids who want to be stupid but weren't born that way" - pretty funny for our brother in the college dorms). I didn't post about my EXTREMELY difficult decision to not audition for ugly step-sister in Cinderella (timing just isn't right) or my excitement for friends who will be in it. I didn't post about the General Relief Society broadcast and attending with my mother and sister in the Colleyville Stake (so delightful). Or about the sisters in my ward who told me the next day in church that the super enthusiastic choir director reminded them of me! I didn't post about our decision to move out of our townhome and buy a house or our difficulties finding something in our price range that we feel good about. I didn't blog about Richard's old car throwing a rod or the new car we got for him (a slick black 2nd gen Eclipse) $1000 under blue book. I didn't post about my excitement for my nephew on the way (Jonathan and Jayne's 2nd child). I didn't post about distress about figuring out a new haircut (I think I'm ready to go chin-length but just can't decide).

I didn't post about any of those things . . . and probably won't. . . :o)

A week of firsts!

This week I went on a business trip and it was a great week of "firsts".

My first trip to Chicago (notice who was performing - my husband said he wouldn't have believed it was a recent photo except for the 2008 on the sign)

My first trip to Home Office (this car is actually inside the building in the "History of Allstate area")

My first taxi ride (super expensive but the cabbie was really nice. We talked the whole way to the hotel. He is a non-practicing Muslim who is part of an arranged marriage. He doesn't plan on doing that for his children. Very interesting.)

My first ride on the "blue line". (I thought this sign with instructions on how to hold on to your children was hilarious. I couldn't stop giggling.)

I have a great trip. I felt like a contributor in our conference which is always a nice feeling. And I'm super duper glad to be home with my sweet husband and doggie.
